Chelsea vs Real Madrid: Good news for Chelsea ahead clash as Madrid star ruled out while Chelsea received Rudiger and Mount boost

Thomas Tuchel’s side head into Wednesday’s semi-final second leg against Real after beating Fulham 2-0 in the Premier League.

Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane ruled out of Chelsea clash

Real Madrid have confirmed that Raphael Varane will miss the second leg of their Champions League semi-final with Chelsea through injury.

The France international played the full 90 in the first leg last week, but he lasted just 45 minutes against Osasuna at the weekend before being substituted with discomfort in his leg.

Now, Los Blancos have revealed that Varane has indeed suffered an injury to his right abductor muscle, and as a result he will not be available for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

Zinedine Zidane should however be boosted by the returns of Ferland Mendy and Sergio Ramos, though, with both men returning to team training on Monday morning.

Varane joins Lucas Vazquez and Dani Carvajal on the sidelines, but fellow defender Marcelo should be cleared to play despite being called up for polling duty.

Real head to the English capital after a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their clash with Chelsea, during which Christian Pulisic broke the deadlock before Karim Benzema’s 71st Champions League goal levelled the tie.

Thomas Tuchel offers Antonio Rudiger

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Chelsea should welcome back Antonio Rudiger to the side against Real Madrid, but Mateo Kovacic is still a doubt for the semi-final tie.

Tuchel is confident Rudiger will return to the side on Wednesday evening but he will have to play with a mask on. However, it could be ‘too close’ for Kovacic to come back into the fold.

“I think Toni can play with a mask and the guys on the bench will be fit for Wednesday,” said Tuchel. “It might be too close for Mateo but we still have hope.”

Chelsea also have another injury scare to deal with after Mason Mount landed awkwardly on his back against Fulham.

Tuchel hopes Mount will be available for selection after he took him off in the second half following the landing, taking no risks.

“I hope really that Mason [Mount] is not a big thing and hopefully he can fully recover for Real Madrid,” Tuchel told Sky Sports.
